Blood Pressure

Description

What is the Test?
The blood pressure test measures the force of blood against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps it around your body. It is expressed as two numbers: systolic (the pressure when the heart beats) and diastolic (the pressure when the heart rests between beats).

How the Test is Done?
The test is performed using a sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff) and a stethoscope or an automated blood pressure monitor. The procedure involves:

  1. Placing the cuff around the upper arm.
  2. Inflating the cuff to restrict blood flow.
  3. Slowly deflating the cuff while measuring the blood flow to record the systolic and diastolic pressures.

Preparation Required:

  • Rest: Sit quietly for a few minutes before the test.
  • Avoid: Caffeine, smoking, and heavy meals for at least 30 minutes before the test.
  • Clothing: Wear loose-fitting clothes on the arm where the cuff will be placed.

Significance of the Results:

  • Normal Range: Typically, blood pressure is considered normal if it is below 120/80 mmHg.
  • Elevated Levels: Higher readings may indicate:
    • Hypertension: Chronic high blood pressure, which can lead to cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and kidney damage.
    • Hypotension: Abnormally low blood pressure, which may cause dizziness, fainting, and can be a sign of underlying health issues.

Regular monitoring and management of blood pressure are essential to prevent complications and maintain overall health.
